FAQs

Therapy Vs. Coaching

Overlap

Both therapy and coaching are invested in aiding in the improvement of their client's lives.

Both use techniques of goal setting, personal practices, and even breath worth and meditation / mindfulness to achieve life shifts.

Distinctions

The practice of coaching and therapy differ in their focus, approach, training, duration, purpose, and clientele.

Therapy

Coaching

Understanding / healing past experiences to improve impact on present behavior

Focus

Understanding present with awareness of past to impact future.

Hierarchal, using therapeutic techniques based on psychological theories.

Approach

Partnership centric, using Directives, Guidance, Motivation, Strategies

Formally educated and trained in psychology, social work, or counseling; adhere to ethical standards set by governing bodies.

Training

May or may not have training in un-standardized programs; their life's work is the basis of their credentials

Can be long-term, lasting months into years depending on the severity and issues.

Duration

Usually shorter-term, lasting a few months up to a year, depending on goals and needs.

Treating mental health, deeper emotional issues, and improving overall well-being.

Purpose

Achieving goals, improving performance / personal growth, and overall life satisfaction.

People dealing with mental health issues, emotional difficulties, and significant life challenges.

Clientele

Generally, people who are functioning in healthy emotional / psychological ways but want to improve certain aspects of life.

My Experience

There is some therapeutic elements to my coaching approach, including witnessing, active listening, and recognizing patterns and behaviors. A huge aspect of life would be missing if coaching ignored the past, as this sets one's behavior and conditioning and impacts the present and therefore the future. However the bulk of our time is spent on the present moving into the future, and addressing the past only as it is relevant
